Sharing a space amidst other music lovers and connecting as an audience with the musician for an hour and a half long set is why live music is so powerful and integral in our society. Live music is about sonically connecting with the musician who fans often deem their idol, role model, or physical representation of the music that soundtracks their entire life. However, the purity of live music has recently become more of a murky facade due in large part to the gruesome reality of sexual assault and harassment. For example, I do not think a genuine relationship should be a constant demand for Snapchat nudes from your partner. This incessant request is the exact tactic musician Garrett Borns, known in the music world as BORNS, used on several of his fans that he found to be pretty or that had interest in him.

Next Story. One of the best concert experiences for many people who listen to indie music stems from the band Summer Salt, who is open to meeting fans after concerts, taking endless photos, signing shirts, and following them back on Instagram. This friendliness and interaction with fans allows a gateway for the members to abuse and hurt the ones who support them the most - one in particular, Phil Baier. Former member Phil Baier has been accused of toxic behavior and sexual misconduct a multitude of times. This mindset is solely caused by the fact that his small amount of fame that he receives is sent straight to his. An entitlement that he will continue to get if he resumed making music. In the abuse of his very own fans, he assumes consent and the ability to take advantage of vulnerable girls who were only trying to get to know a musician that they admired so much. This admiration would grow into hate, as fans nationwide would discover that one of their favorite music groups contained a abuser. This hate began on Twitter, as women would begin to tell their story of how they were sexually assaulted, which would later be compiled into a shareable GoogleDoc. Two of these women included in the document were concert attendees Abby Jones and Vanessa Herb.
W ithin the span of a week, two extremely popular groups in the indie music scene faced severe consequences as a result of sexual misconduct allegations against one or more members in their bands. On Aug. Six days later, Summer Salt, based out of Austin, Texas, announced their departure with Epitaph Records and temporary hiatus, five days after the firing of bassist, Phil Baier, also following sexual misconduct allegations. The infamous Google document was a collaborative effort that involved several former fans of The Orwells, each describing their own horrific accounts of being taken advantage of by varying members of the band. As it began going viral, thousands of people across social media chimed in to express their disgust with the band, including other local artists denouncing them from the Chicago music scene. We never felt it was our place to make public these stories that were not ours to tell. Once the MeToo movement began to gain momentum late last year, the unspoken world of sexual misconduct within the music industry was exposed to the public and has continued to gradually emerge. Though not as prominent as in the film industry, indie musicians guilty of sexual misconduct are being reprimanded and facing life-altering consequences, none of which involving any formal charges being made. On Oct.
Summer Salt is finally back after their hiatus. Not only they have revealed a new single last November, they have also released a new album last September — from which they will donated their earnings to Planned Parenthood, Safe, and Music Care, right after the removal of one of their members, Phil Baier, due to allegations of sexual abuse targeting fans. After removing Phil, Summer Salt cancelled their fall tour and went into hiatus. Like their other songs, they still stick with 60s pop influences. In my opinion, the salty boys has succeeded in creating a unique song that got me in love. With the presence of new songs, a new albums, and a winter concert, it is proven that Summer Salt is ready to open a new sheet of their journey in the music industry.
